Nearly 18 years. Six different roles. And he is just getting started!
He has been voted “employee of the year”, he is the proud “human bridge” between techies and non-techies, and he has recently switched from his team lead role in CreditNext to a full-time coding position in our CreditY team. Because once a developer, always a developer. This is Luc Geniar, Senior Developer at Onguard!
From Belgium to the Netherlands, from carpenter to code
Luc grew up in a small village outside Antwerp, Belgium and, by his own admission, got bored at school. After earning a diploma in carpentry, he quickly realised sawing wood wasn’t his forever path. But what was?
“Programming has always been my hobby. My dad was an early adopter, so we always had computers around. So, I started with development and networking. And it all just clicked.”
A few odd jobs and one very productive warehouse reorganisation later, he landed at a two-man software company building what we now call a CMMS. “It was just me and the CEO. I was lucky to learn many things in that first development role.”
But this is not what brought him to the Netherlands. Love did. From there, he was one CV upload away from joining Onguard. “I put my CV online and within a few days I got loads of calls. One stood out. It was a company in a castle, with a warm, no-nonsense vibe.”
Starting at Onguard: From software to team lead
It is August 2007 when Luc steps into the castle for the first time. “Apart from being excited by the castle itself, I felt the vibe very quickly. Open and collaborative. First-name culture, no silos. Just smart people solving problems together,” he remembers.
“The learning curve was steep in these first months,” he laughs. Luc helped structure a team, worked on a legacy app, visited clients abroad, and became a Sinterklaas for kids at a company event, where a heavy Belgian accent kept him unrecognisable!
And back to code
Since then, he’s held six different roles at Onguard, from field engineer to team lead. And now, full circle, back to his roots as Senior Developer!
“I was a team lead for a long time, but I missed the challenge of building code. I needed that puzzle-solving energy again. So, when my long-time colleague and friend, Jan, retired, I stepped in as a senior developer for our new solution: CreditY. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to challenge myself again and my colleagues at Onguard were very supportive.”
His superpower all these years working at Onguard? “I’m good at explaining complex things in Jip & Janneke terms,” he laughs. “It helps when you need to get everyone, including customers, on the same page.”
What is your best memory from working at Onguard?
“Oh, that one’s easy,” Luc says. “It was back in 2010. During a company meeting just before the Christmas party, the CEO showed slides with all the recent projects we had been working on. I was involved in almost all of them, but I was given no credit at all. But later that day, I was surprised with the “Employee of the Year” award by the CEO himself. Turns out they’d left me out on purpose, just to throw me off!” he laughs. “It was a total surprise, and a proud moment.”
Life outside the laptop
He may spend his days solving software puzzles, but that builder’s mindset never left him. Whether he’s building custom arcade cabinets, automating his house like a sci-fi film, or helping organise a 10-day festival in his town, Luc brings the same curiosity he applies at work. And he plays pool in his free time with his Onguard bestie, Jan. “It’s not just work that’s better with great colleagues,” he laughs.
What is the best thing about working at Onguard?
What keeps someone in a company for so long? When asked, Luc doesn’t hesitate: “The people. Always the people. From that first castle coffee to today’s hybrid setting, it’s the culture that makes it feel like home.”

Security has a strange problem. When it works, nobody notices. At Onguard, the security team decided that wasn’t good enough. Customers shouldn’t have to take security on faith. They should be able to see it. Learn more about Onguard data security.
Fake emails, fake calls, fake documents: AI has made them all easier to create and harder to recognise. The defence is surprisingly low-tech. If an urgent request involves money, access or data, verify it through a second channel you already trust. Call back on a known number. Ask a colleague.
Onguard and Storecove sat down for a joint session on the e-invoicing mandates reshaping how European businesses get paid. The takeaway: this isn’t a future problem anymore. France’s mandate went live on 1 September. Germany, Poland, Spain and Slovakia are next, with the EU’s ViDA directive setting a 2030 ceiling for the rest.
